School photo.jpgHi, I am Laura Haverkamp a High School Media specialist and new Ph.D. student in Library Science at USC. I am just finishing up my 17th year at Dreher High School in Columbia, SC as a Media Specialist. I previously worked as an English teacher at CA Johnson High School in Columbia, and at John Jay High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. I earned a B.A. in English and Communication from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1991, earned a M.Ed. in Secondary English from George Mason University in Virginia in 1995, and a M.L.I.S. from USC in 1999. I earned National Board Certification in 2003, and earned a renewal in 2013. At Dreher, I currently sponsor the Book Club, occasionally assist with Women's Soccer, and manage a whole bunch of laptops that interfere with my ability to actively “librarian.”
My near future plans are to plod my way slowly through Ph.D course work while I work full time, and micro-manage my poor teenagers, who will both be attending the high school where I work next year. I will also attend one son’s school plays, and drive around to my other son’s travel soccer games. In the distant future, I may become a college professor in Library Science, training new school librarians who hopefully will not find my micro-managing as irritating as my boys find it.
In my personal time (what’s left!) I run, lift weights, play soccer, and pester my homely dog. I am also a voracious reader and sporadic home-improver. Most importantly I'm raising my two beautiful boys, Gus, 16 and Flynn, 13.
